First Class

The first perl class was today. I think that I did alright even though this was the first time I have ever taught anything to adults. Everyone told me that they really learned a lot and I truly hope so.

I'm using Learning Perl, Fourth Edition as the basis for the class. Today we covered the first six chapters. Why that many? These are programmers. They are familiar with the key concepts. They will make associations between Perl and the language(s) they know best.

I only touched on about three sections from chapter one. I summarized each section of the other five chapters and had them do one or two exercises per chapter. In the classes to follow, we'll cover less material in the same amount of time but have additional exercises.

I loved the facial expressions and comments when they saw the shortest way to implement tac.

Ten copies of Learning Perl, Fourth Edition: $250.82
Lunch for the entire class: about $100
Seeing the facial expressions and hearing the comments when the class saw the shortest way to implement tac: priceless

In case you've forgotten, it's

print reverse <>;

Congrats

You're doing the right thing. And I'm happy we got to do the right thing for you.
